Amy in the Superleague – Surrey Storm

Surrey Storm 2012-2016

Amy was first selected for the Surrey Storm long squad in September 2012, just before her 19th birthday. Opportunities were limited in her first season with established Wing Defence players Nat Seaton and Stef Bello also in the squad. Storm made it to the semi-finals of the Superleague competition before falling to Cato-inspired Celtic Dragons who themselves were narrowly defeated by Team Bath in a 2013 final which went to extra time.

Thunder heartbreak

The 2014 season saw Amy break into the first team as Storm progressed through the regular unbeaten (12 wins and 2 draws) and reach the grand final in Worcester to play Northern Thunder. In a very tight and edgy game, Storm had the centre pass with the scores level and 30 seconds left on the clock; unfortunately, possession was lost and Thunder cooly moved the ball to a certain Helen Housby who shot the winning goal in the final seconds (a prelude to her Commonwealth Games golden moment four years later!). An incredibly tough loss to take after an almost impeccable season, the players were completely distraught. However, they would not have to wait too long for that first, elusive title.

Champions at last and then again!

The regular 2015 season was less successful than in 2014 but nonetheless Storm progressed to another final after overcoming (another) Cato-sized hurdle in Yorkshire Jets in the semi-final at the Sports Park, Amy and Josie making a huge impact coming on in the second half as Storm roared back to win 76-60 in a high scoring encounter.

An assignment against old rivals Hertfordshire Mavericks was the outcome after Mavs took the honours against previously unbeaten Manchester Thunder. The final saw Storm gradually ease away from Mavs, inspired by Pam Cookey and the ever reliable Rachel Dunn , and they secured their first superleague title, at the fourth time of asking, prevailing 56-39.

The 2016 season was another closely fought campaign and Storm again secured a home semi final in a re-run of the 2015 final. Down at half time against a motivated Mavs team, Storm again displayed their mettle to come back strongly to move ahead in the final two minutes in a tense and electric atmosphere at the SSP. The win meant that the two best teams in the league that season would meet again for the second time in three years, this time at the Copper Box Arena on 7 May 2016 for a repeat of the 2014 final. Once again, the game did not disappoint! The first two quarters saw Storm explode out of the blocks, completely dominating Thunder to go into half time 13 goals up, 32-19. Thunder though are a team that never lies down, especially one with the quality of players such as Bayman, Haythornthwaite, Housby, Gibson and Cardwell in their ranks. Gradually, they started to claw back the deficit in the third quarter (to 7) and by the closing minutes of the game this was down to one, but Storm managed to hold firm and Rachel Dunn scored the final goal in the dying seconds to put the seal on the victory and erase a little of the 2014 grand final pain.
